Why Do Cats Scratch Anyways?
If you have a cat scratching problem you are probably asking yourself why do cats scratch? This behavior comes naturally to cats and there are three main reasons why cats feel compelled to do it.
1. Cats scratch to mark their territory. This is the primary reason why cats will mark up your furniture and carpet. They have a natural need to let other animals know that this is their territory and they are not welcome here.
2. Cats scratch to exercise. Cats use this activity to stretch and strengthen their bodies and claws. It allows them to keep their front legs in shape and ready for a fight if necessary, and is a way for them to keep their claws in good condition.
3. Cats love it do it because it just feels good to them. Cats would mark up your house for no other reason than it just because it feels good. Just look at a cat the next time it is doing this behavior. They look like they are in heaven literally!
As you can see there are several reasons why cats engage in this activity. There are many ways to solve this problem without having to declaw your cat. One way is to use scratching posts. Strategically placed scratching posts can not only protect your furniture but allow your cat to have more exercise.
